White House Initiatives Improving Life Outcomes For Boys And Men Of Color

  • White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for African Americans
  • White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics
  • White House Initiative on American Indian and Alaska Native Education
  • President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders
  • White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships
  • White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

  • Two-thirds of this population are immigrants.
  • There are significant language barriers in their communities.
  • There is a myth that this subset is doing better than other minorities in the country.

Latino Americans

  • Many children are arriving to schools behind other children.
  • Only 7 percent of teachers are Latino.
  • There is a lack of data for Latino males. Leaders want to be able to build on that data so that they can serve their community and their direct needs.

Strategies and Action Steps

  • Collect better and deeper information. Disaggregate data from the government so that people can make use of it.
  • Immigrants need better language programs.
  • Hold up current initiatives that are working so that they become more well known and models for other communities.
  • Imagine ways we can we connect school systems to the people doing the groundwork.
  • Establish more policies for youth, such as those providing a decent education for youth in juvenile detention and extending time for youth from poor neighborhoods to complete college.
  • Those who are in the White House representing these initiatives are open to the dialogue, and people are looking for more of these opportunities for dialogue in the future.

"Look at what it means for the individual, whether it be the individual boy, or the individual mother, like me." Kathy Ko Chin
