Social Media and Social Movements: Why Social Media Won’t Solve Everything
This year has highlighted the ways in which social media has operated as pure concentrated social capital, connecting people and movements to create social change. Although social media can raise the voices of those in the margins, it still can't CURE the intersecting systems ensnaring people of color. The narrative that social media alone can fight the dismissal and disenfranchisement of people of color is a half-truth, and a dangerous one at that. This session will discuss key strategies for online movements and complementary offline action to disrupt the current status quo and sustain reforms.
