Revolutionary Black Parenting
During this session, we will challenge participants to analyze their current strategies to improve outcomes for Black male youth and whether those approaches include fostering racial identity exploration. We introduce the idea of #BlackGenius- a concept in which Black youth are presented with the realities and roots of racial oppression, but also armed with the tools to withstand its negative effects and create disruptive technologies to dismantle it. Participants will explore how their current strategies for enhancing life outcomes for Black boys can be enriched by seeking to encourage #BlackGenius to flourish as opposed to deficit based strategies focused on fixing youth. Session leaders will speak from their experiences as parents, intervention developers, and philanthropic leaders who have developed innovative ways to engage and inspire Black youth to succeed. Ultimately this workshop will inspire participants to conceptualize working with Black boys not as a mission of helping them to learn the system but rather to create a new system that allows them and their futures sons and daughters to thrive.
