While much-criticized and full of foibles, rap music has served as the soundtrack for youth organizing, rebellion, and resistance. This genre has also been a vehicle that has carried the critical consciousness and voices of Black, Latin@, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Native youth across the country – and ultimately youth around the world. Participants in this session will explore rap music’s genesis, how it has catalyzed diverse youth movements, and how it can continue to galvanize and sustain critical consciousness, conversations, and activism among young people. (PLEASE NOTE: the session will contain graphic and/or explicit language, words, and images.)
