Anti-Scale: Exploring Impact through Place-Based Work
What does it look like when we define scale as "going deep" within a specific community, measuring by depth of impact instead of by number of people reached or number of communities served? We hear from three place-based initiatives that are going deep in their communities in different ways: a city-wide organization supporting high-performing social change efforts in Baltimore, a group working to transform the experiences of kids prosecuted in the adult criminal justice system in Philadelphia, and an Oakland-based organization strengthening local economies through worker ownership. When scale is re-defined as depth of impact, how does this affect how we organize ourselves, fund the work, and measure our progress?
